How to create a dream catcher

In Atlantis the priests developed dream catchers to help filter out bad dreams and enable the dreamer to remember good ones.

The Native Americans still use dream catchers, for at the fall of Atlantis they carried their knowledge of shamanism with them to North America.

Bless your dream catcher, ask it to work for your highest good and hang it above your bed. We wish you sweet dreams.

In Discover Atlantis we offer simple and clear instructions for you and your children to make your own dream catcher.

Instructions on how to create your dream dream catcher:

  1. Wrap an 8 to 10 inch (20-25cm) ring with the material of your choice. Keep the material tight and do not let it get twisted. (The Native American Indians tend to use suede lacing.)
  2. Glue both ends of the material to the ring and hold it in place with a peg until it has dried (see stage1)
  3. Next follow the instructions to create a dream catcher using natural or synthetic materials. Tie one end of the material to the ring and make loose half-inch (1cm) knots around the ring, spacing them about 1.5inches (4cm) apart. Keep the twine taut between the knots. (See stages 2 and 3.) When choosing what material to use for the web of your dream catcher, remember that it needs to be visible. Materials such as string or thick cotton or nylon can be used. A true Native American or Atlantean dream catcher would be made with sinew, for example catgut.
  4. Make the section of the web using the loops you have just created. (See Stage 4)
  5. Continue looping and knotting, keeping the twine tight. (See Stage 5) Eventually you will have a small hole in the centre. Tie a double knot in the twine and put a drop of glue on the knot to make sure it holds. Once the glue has dried, cut off any twine that may be poking out.
  6. To decorate the dream catcher you will need about 2 feet (60 cm) of string for attaching beads and/or feathers. Cut the string into 4 equal pieces and thread the beads or tie the feathers to the ends. Tie these decorative strings to the bottom, sides and centre of the dream catcher.
  7. Be sure to attach a hanging loop to the top (See Stage 6)
